Don't use circular scribbles to draw foliage. Use more convex shaped scumbling - like crescent shapes and scribbly calligraphic marks - to draw the shadows in and around clusters of foliage, and your trees will look much more realistic.

Save your good brushes. When mixing paint color's use a cheap paint brush so you can save your expensive brushes for the actual applying of paint.

When attempting pointillism be patient and be sure not to loose your frame of reference. Don't get lazy every point counts.
